- Are there membership dues?
Yes. There are dues for each show and each SHOT! Magazine issue that you wish to participate in. You may choose to either be in the show only, or
to also be included in the upcoming issue of SHOT! Magazine. Dues are paid at each Commitment Meeting. If you
don't commit to being a part of the show or magazine, you pay nothing.
Both levels of participation include web site gallery space for you to upload your photos and build your profile.
Show Only Dues
For show participation only, the dues vary depending on venue costs, but usually average around $25.
Members are normally assigned something to bring to the show as well such as an appetizer or cups. It is a club after all!
Show and SHOT! Magazine Dues
Members pay $150 for magazine submittal. This includes a full page layout of the work submitted for the concurrent Photo Martini Club show. - What does it take to be a member?
You don't need a portfolio to be in the club — just come to one of our Commitment Meetings! Once you commit to being in a show, you're one of us!You can shoot in any format from a cell phone camera to a professional digital SLR — the possibilities are endless! There are photographers of every level in the Photo Martini Club — from novice to professional. The club tries to focus on creativity more than perfection of f-stops ... although, execution is always a bonus! - What's the process of each show?
First of all, we have a show once every 2 months. Members don't have to participate in every show to be in the club.
We have a series of meetings which help us to put on the show. They consist of:
- The Voting / Commitment Meeting: Members/potential members vote for the next show theme (two shows ahead-we must vote this way as we are not only a club but a magazine too!)
Then members pay their dues to be in the next show at hand (hence, the commitment meeting; sorry, the dues are non-refundable!) Members are normally assigned something to bring to the show as well such as an appetizer or cups. It is a club after all!
- The Critique: Members are asked to show up with their work for the show. It doesn't have to be framed or final prints. This is a great way of sharing work with one another to share concepts. Don't worry-not too many tears have been shed! Just kidding..This is a very fun night and normally a drunken potluck!
- FTP Upload: Each participating -magazine-member is asked to upload their photos, descriptions of work and more to Photo Martini Club Member link on the website. Work must be uploaded by this date to ensure magazine deadline. If not uploaded in time, member understands that they might not be in the magazine. No refunds for slackers!
- Magazine Distribution Day! Please show up if you can to help get the word out!
- The Hanging: Members show up with required material. If cannot be there, find a "buddy" to help you.
- The Show! Members are asked to show up to the show on time to market their work and spread the word about the club....Good times!
See our Behind the Scenes for more information. - Do I need my work to be framed and matted?
Generally, yes. However, sometimes members like to have work presented in an installation kind of installment. That is ok. Just as long as the work looks gallery ready. Gallery ready = matted and framed. You don't have to use the most expensive means to frame. Sometimes the photographers even go to Michael's or Target. The night of the show, we also put the artist descriptions next to the work. This is usually a very brief paragraph with the artists' name, title of work, price and how they got to their enterpretation of the assignment. During the show cycle, each participating artists' name will also be on the homepage of the website. - Do I need to market the show?
Although we have listings in event calendars across the city, each photographer is encouraged to do their own Evites or group emails to help market the show. - I have some old work that I think will work for the assignment; can I use these shots?
No. All work must be shot between the voting meeting date and the day of the show. Please also make sure the body of work meshes well as a group. For example, don't use one tan frame and three black frames. - How many pieces can I have in the show?
Generally, the guideline is 3 to 5 photos. Also, size really does matter! Never print your work until after the commitment meeting. You will get an email from the show founder letting you know how big you can go. - I can't really make it to any meetings this show but I still want to be in it. Is that ok?
Unfortunately, no. You must attend at least two of the meetings and if you think you will miss the hanging, you must find a buddy to hang it for you. You must be self-sufficient to be in the club and have a desire to meet cool people and to have fun!
